Registration
Academic and Financial Responsibility
During an academic session,
from advance registration in the previous semester
to final exams, you assume academic and financial
responsibility for the courses in which you
enroll. You must register successfully by
the designated date in order to receive credit for
the course in which you are enrolled, and you are
relieved of these responsibilities only by
formally terminating enrollment by dropping or
withdrawing from those courses. For a schedule
of deadlines concerning registration please
consult the
Academic Calendar;
for information on how to register, please consult
the Office of the Registrar’s
Questions on Registration.

Registration Holds
Holds in the registration system, sometimes
referred to as "flags," restrict you from
registering for classes. You may have a hold on
your account for a variety of reasons. Academic
holds are placed by a program department, or
college if, for example, you are required to see
an advisor or need departmental approval to
register for a course. Financial holds are placed
if you have an outstanding fee that must be paid.
You can check for registration holds using Banner
Self-Service.

Drop/Add Period
This is a designated time period at the beginning
of each semester when you may add or drop a course
(sometimes with fee charges). For specific dates
and fees, see the
Academic Calendar.
These deadlines are firm. You must add a course
by the deadline if you wish to receive academic
credit and the only way to drop a course
without any indication on your transcript is to do
so by the deadline.

Grade Replacement
Under a policy effective Fall 2007, you may repeat
up to two courses (maximum of 8 credits) and count
only the higher of the two grades in GPA
calculations. There are a number of exclusions
and exceptions to this policy so you are strongly
advised to consult an advisor before making any
decision. For example, the policy only applies to
courses taken for a letter grade at UNC Charlotte
in Fall 2007 or after; it cannot be used in
instances when the original grade was the result
of an academic integrity violation; and it cannot
be applied to some courses in the College of
Health and Human Services. Perhaps most
importantly, you must decide to take advantage of
the grade replacement policy by submitting the
Grade Replacement Form (obtained from the
Office of the Registrar)
by the deadline indicated in the
Academic Calendar.

Midterm Unsatisfactory Grade Reports
Faculty are asked to report midterm grades for
undergraduate students earning a “D” or “F” and
graduate students earning a “C” or “U.”
Subsequently, the Registrar mails a letter to
students listing the specific courses and grades
in which a midterm deficiency was reported. Be
sure not to rely solely on this process, as there
may be reason a faculty member is unable to submit
grades. Learn about your academic progress and
status by speaking with your faculty members early
in the semester.

Withdrawal from
a Course (retaining other courses)
After the drop/add period ends the only way to
drop a course but to remain enrolled in other
courses is to withdraw. If you withdraw from a
course it will show on your transcript with the
grade of W but will not count towards your GPA.
This action must be taken by the deadline
indicated in the
Academic Calendar.
After that deadline, exceptions may be requested,
but only in cases where extenuating circumstances
such as serious illness can be demonstrated.
Unsatisfactory academic performance itself is not
an extenuating circumstance.

Withdrawal from the University
This action terminates your enrollment at the
University; however, all courses will remain on
your transcript with the grade of W.
Withdrawing from UNC Charlotte must
be done by the deadline shown in the
Academic Calendar.
After that deadline, exceptions may be requested
only in cases with extenuating circumstances.

Final Course
Grade Review
A course grade assigned in a manner consistent
with University policy can be changed only by the
instructor. Procedures for addressing concerns
about a grade can be found under the
Request for Review
policy.

Final Examinations
Final Exam schedules
are published each semester. Students having
three examinations in one day will be allowed to
reschedule the middle examination by filling out a
form obtainable in the
Office of the Registrar.
(Note: Upon agreement of the student and another
instructor, a different exam may be rescheduled.)
Refer to the
Final Examinations Policy
for more details.
Academic Standing
Good Academic Standing & Satisfactory Progress
If your GPA is a 2.0 or
higher, you are considered in good academic
standing at the University. However, some
departments and Colleges will have additional
policies regarding satisfactory progression which
require a higher GPA and/or the completion of
specific courses in order to remain enrolled in
that program. For specifics, see your College or
major department in the
Undergraduate Catalog.

Academic Probation
If your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 you are
placed on Academic Probation and this is noted on
your academic record and grade report. In order
to get off of probation, you must bring your
cumulative GPA up to a 2.0 (or higher). Being on
probation is a serious matter as you run the risk
of being suspended if your grades do not improve;
you are encouraged to meet with your advisor as
soon as possible after receiving notification of
your probation to discuss strategies for improving
your academic performance.

Academic Suspension
Academic suspension terminates your enrollment at
the University. You will be suspended if either
of the two following conditions apply: a) your
grade point deficit
is 14 or
more OR b) you fail to achieve good standing
(i.e., 2.0 or higher) by the end of two
successive semesters (excluding summer session).
There are few exceptions to this policy. You may
not re-enroll in the University during a regular
semester (fall, spring) until you have applied
and been approved for readmission. See:
FAQs about Academic
Suspension. |
